Certain psychological consequences arising from confrontation with or exposure to highly shocking and upsetting experiences are known as post traumatic stress or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
The upsetting and shocking experiences are to include threatened psychological and/or physical integrity, actual or threatened death, or serious physical injury for a stress to be called a post traumatic stress.
Sometimes it is called post traumatic stress reaction to reject its status as a manifestation of a pre-existing psychological weakness on the part of the patient and to highlight its standing as a routine result of traumatic experience.
Symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress:
They can include;
- Loss of appetite
- Extreme distress when exposed to the experience reminders
- Emotional self-mortification
- Insomnia
- Anxiety
- Nightmares
- Clinical depression
- Flashbacks
- Increased startle response
- Irritability
Treatment Options:
Some of the famous treatments for PTSD are as follows.
- Critical Incident Stress Management or CISM, an early interventional method after a traumatic incident, is often administered on a post traumatic stress patient to eliminate the effects of intense shocking and upsetting experiences. It has been observed that the occurrence of post traumatic stress disorder is usually prevented by the use of CISM. However, there are iatrogenic, a condition resulting from the action of the doctor, e.g. an allergic reaction resulting from administration of an injection by a veterinarian, effects association with CISM, a recent study reveals.
- Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing or EMDR is the most researched and effective psychotherapeutic method for the treatment of PTSD.
- Another non-medical treatment method for PTSD is Traumatic Incident Reduction.
- One of the most commonly adopted treatment methods for PSTD is a combination of psychotherapy and psychotropic drug therapy, Effexor, Zoloft, Remeron, Zyprexa, or Seroquel.
