Stress Incontinence

An unintentional leak of urine that occurs during any physical activity that increases pressure from the abdomen like exercise, coughing, laughing, or sneezing.

Causes of Stress Incidence:

It is the incapability of the nervous system, the lower urinary tract, and the kidneys to function normally that the ability of one to hold urine and maintain continence gets affected. Furthermore, if one can not recognize and does not appropriately respond to the urge to urinate, he/she can experience stress incontinence.

Since this disorder is due to the problematic bladder storage, in which strength of urethral sphincter, the muscles that assist in controlling urination is reduced, the sphincter is not able to prevent urine flow at the time when it gets affected by the increased pressure from the abdomen.

One of the causes of stress incontinence is one’s being a female. Studies show that 50% of all women experience occasional urinary incontinence, and about 10% of all women experience this frequently. It has been observed that it is often experienced by the women who have had multiple pregnancies and vaginal childbirths.

Treatment of Stress Incontinence:

It depends on how much the symptoms interfere with the person’s daily life and on the severity of the symptoms for a sufferer to be suggested a treatment.

If you are a smoker, your doctor will most probably ask you to quit this habit. What else your doctor may ask you to avoid are alcohol and caffeinated beverages such as soda. What your physician will request you to do is to keep a urinary diary in which you are to record the number of times you pass urine during the day and night and how often urine gets leaked.

Treatment options for stress incontinence are:

  • Behavioral changes
  • Pelvic floor muscles training
  • Medication
  • Surgery
